During this festival, we engage ourselves in the performance of religious prayers, enchantments, fasting and meditation. The literal translation of Navratri means “Nine Nights” and hence the aura of the nights is a festival of its own. During these nine great nights, people rejoice and pray to the Goddess Durga by performing the cultural dance known as Garbas. It has been told that even Lord Krishna prayed to Goddess Durga to seek power to ask for victory in battle. Lord Krishna also celebrated Navratri, and He introduced “Raas Garba” which is performed with thin wooden sticks and normally in pairs.

The dances are performed in a circular fashion, and a holy lamp and the picture or idol of Goddess Durga is placed in the centre. Each night is dedicated to a different incarnation of the powerful Goddess which include Goddess Shailputri, Brahmcharni, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri, in that order. The grand festival of Navratri ends at Dusshera which was the day when God Rama overpowered Ravana and freed the world from his reign of destruction. On this day Hindus recall the epic Ramayana and perform rituals on their weapons and vehicles.
